On July 14, 1923 the Dupont Rayon Company announced that it had bought
the original Old Hickory Village and the plant site.  Plans were made for the
new factory and two tracts of land adjoining the plant and village were sold.
The first area was called Dupontonia (now Lakewood) and was home to Old
Hickory’s first public hotel.  The second area was called Rayon City and was
developed with the intention of having residences and businesses together.
The new developments created a need to build a new bridge over the
Cumberland River, which we still use today.
